Explain the importance of communication, relationship building and emotional intelligence

when working with adults and young people

Effective teaching and learning requires clear communication through a trusting and positive relationship. As part of effective teaching and learning understanding and controlling the emotional responses helps to ensure a positive learning environment with constructive outcomes.

Communication is key
From clear and effective communication strong relationships can be built. Traditionally verbal communication has been used in the teaching environment. This can be emulated in digital format with Video, Video messaging or webinar technologies. Personalisation of the communication can also help to strengthen written communications. For example using avatars or photographs. To be most effective communication needs to be a two-way process.

Misunderstanding of intent can be caused by poor communication. This is especially true of drawn or written communication. All emotion and body language is lost which can lead to the original intent also being lost. If communication is not in real-time there is no chance to question and clarify intent.

Relationship Building for effective teaching and learning.
With a strong and effective relationship a higher level of learning can be achieved. A positive environment will allow for questioning for greater understanding and allow for constructive criticism to be well received and built upon.

Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognise your own and other people's emotions. The ability to discriminate between different feelings and to use emotional information to guide thinking and behaviour.
Understanding how a learner is reacting and managing their learning can aid in ensuring a successful outcome to the learning. With digital learning isolation needs to be guarded against with learners supported adequately through a number of media by both tutor and peer groups.
